Строительство Днепровской гидроэлектростанции началось в 1927 г., первый агрегат был пущен в 1932 г. Во время Великой Отечественной Войны плотина ДнепроГЭС была разрушена, а оборудование машинного зала уничтожено. В 1969-1980 гг. был построен ДнепроГЭС-2 мощностью 836 МВт. Вместе с введением ДнепроГЭС-2, была сооружена Запорожская ГРЭС и Запорожская атомная электростанция.
